LUCKNOW: Two youths allegedly set ablaze a teenage dalit girl when she resisted their rape attempt in Sitapur district, 90 km from Lucknow, on Tuesday morning. With 50% burns, the girl, a class XII student, is battling for life in the district hospital. The incident took place in Johri village of Ramkopt police circle in Sitapur district.
The victim's father has alleged that the five youths -- Tillu, Billu, Ajay, Dharmendra and Tuiyan -- all local residents, had been passing obscene remarks at the victim for the past few days. But, the girl usually overlooked their comments.
The miscreants allegedly barged into her house and tried to outrage her modesty. When she resisted, they poured kerosene on her and set her ablaze, her father claimed.
Police said that the incident came to light when the victim was admitted to the district hospital by her father who later informed the police. An FIR has been lodged in connection.
Local residents in Johri village however quoting the victim's younger sister said that the victim had prepared the rotis on Monday night which tasted sour. On her father's objection, she again prepared fresh rotis which again turned out to be sour. Her father then discussed the issue with his neighbour who then asked him to give the rotis first to stray cows and then consume them.
The family however opted not to have dinner on Monday night. Early in the morning, the girl was found wrapped in flames inside her room and was rushed to hospital. Allegations are that three of the five accused named by the victim's father were not even present in the village since morning. Inspector general (IG), Lucknow Zone, SK Singh, said that an FIR has been lodged on the complaint of the victim's father and the investigations are under way.
"We will round up the accuses and interrogate them to confirm if there was any disparity in the sequence of events that have been communicated to the police till now at all," Singh said.
