Fellowship Opportunities with NGO Operation ASHA Posted by: "allthesethingsthatihavedone" avani.parekh@opasha.org Mon Jun 18, 2012 3:57 am (PDT)

Operation ASHA's mission is to eliminate tuberculosis among disadvantaged communities. We do this by providing treatment, counseling, education, and supportive services to tuberculosis patients in the communities where we work. We also implement awareness and preventive measures to prevent tuberculosis in these communities. In addition, we seek to build capacity among governments, public health organizations and other NGOs to adopt and implement our best practices. Operation ASHA began with one TB treatment center in September 2006 and enrolled 26 new patients within 3 months. Today, OpASHA provides tuberculosis treatment and education services in 2,053 slums and villages in six Indian states and two provinces in Cambodia. It is the exclusive provider of TB treatment to nearly five million Indian citizens. With a successful model in place, Operation ASHA continues to grow and expand beyond India's borders to Southeast Asia and Africa, where millions more suffer from tuberculosis. National Safety Council

http://www.nsc.org.in/ About Us National Safety Council (NSC) was set up by the Ministry of Labour, Government of India (GOI) on 4th March, 1966 to generate, develop and sustain a voluntary movement on Safety, Health and Environment (SHE) at the national level. It is an apex nonprofit making, tripartite body, registered under the Societies To fulfill its objective NSC carries out various activities. These include organising and conducting specialised training courses, conferences, seminars & workshops; conducting consultancy studies such as safety audits, hazard evaluation & risk assessment; designing and developing HSE promotional materials & publications; facilitating organisations in celebrating various campaigns e.g. Safety Day, Fire Service Week, World Environment Day. A computerised Management Information Service has been setup for collection, retrieval and dissemination of information on HSE aspects. Campaigns: Road Safety Week The Road Safety Week observance is being initiated by the Ministry of Road Transport & Highways. With a view to supplement the efforts of the Ministry, the Council from the year 2011 has started producing promotional materials like cloth banners, safety posters, pocket guides, safety films, etc to help its Members / Patrons to observe Road Safety Week (1 - 7 January every year) effectively. NATIONAL SAFETY DAY/WEEK The National Safety Day/Safety Week Campaign being spearheaded by the Council for nearly three decades to mark its Foundation Day (4th March) has significantly contributed to reduction in the rate of industrial accidents and created wide spread safety awareness even in such sectors which have not been covered by any safety legislation. The campaign is comprehensive, general and flexible with an appeal to the participating organisations to develop specific activities as per their safety requirements. World Environment Day The World Environment Day (WED) established by the United Nations General Assembly in 1972 is a people's event. It inspires action by governments, industries, community groups and individuals to improve the environment. It provides unique opportunity to raise awareness on environment and mobilise action by all stakeholders. The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) has invited people world over to celebrate the WED on 5th June 2012 with enthusiasm. UNEP has declared the theme for WED 2012 as "Green Economy: Does it include you?"

Mulund college designs perfumery course for the visually challenged

Visually challenged smell jobs....Deepa Sarna Gawli Mulund college designs perfumery course for them

In a welcome initiative that aims to improve the lives of the visually challenged by giving them employment opportunities, VG Vaze College in Mulund has started a four-month perfumery course exclusively for them. The first-of-its-kind course is held free of cost between 9.30am and 11.30am every Friday and Saturday. CPL Aromas Private Limited, a fragrance house, will hire the visually-challenged students doing the course, as evaluators. Vaze College began a post-graduate diploma in perfumery and cosmetics management seven years ago. "Looking at the response we got for that course and the employment opportunities in the market, we decided to start a similar short-term course for the visually challenged that would help them get better jobs," said Dr BB Sharma, principal, Vaze College. Ten visually challenged students aged between 25 and 40 enrolled for the course and seven are still pursuing it. All of them are the sole breadwinners of their families. While some sell kitchen products in trains, others run PCO booths. "I am the only earning member in my family. When the Blind Persons' Association (BPA) informed me about the course, I decided to enrol for it thinking that I could get a good job," said Ambernath resident Bhikaji Sitaram Kolhapure, 40, who sells cutlery in trains. He appeared for his HSC exam (arts stream) after 15 years and secured 55%. "The course is good and it will be very useful to us. We never thought that fragrance would have so much depth and technicalities. The faculty is good and supportive," said Rahul Vijay Shirshat, 35, who travels from Chunabhatti in Sion to Mulund. Born as a premature baby, Shirshat too has cleared his HSC in arts and computer programming. Allahudiin Sheikh, 42, who runs a PCO, is happy that he is learning something new. "The course is unique and job-oriented. As our senses are our strengths, we are able to identify, remember and evaluate the fragrance," said Sheikh, who stays with his wife and daughter at Vangani near Badlapur. The only woman student in the batch, Mandal Raju Pawar, 25, is a housewife. "Once I complete the course and get a job, I can help my husband who sells kitchen products in trains," she said. Unlike the other students, Shankar Pandurang Jaybhaye, 25, is partially impaired and comes from Ahmednagar. "We should have studied this much before. There is a lot to learn and it is not very difficult for students like us," he said. Renuka Thergaonkar, head of department of cosmetic and fragrance, said designing the course was a task. "When we decided to introduce the course for the visually challenged, we had to do a lot of research about making these students identify various fragrances and evaluate them. The result has been positive," she said. "The best part is that unlike us, the students cannot be biased towards a product. We see the attractive packaging first and then the other aspects. But their evaluation is free from any bias," said Thergaonkar who has two full-time staffers on board. The students are given fragrances of the raw material to the finished product to identify and evaluate its components. So far, they have smelt over 150 fragrances and remember all of them. The college also prepares notes for the students in Braille with the help of BPA. Vaze College has four air-conditioned state-of-the-art laboratories - perfumery lab, decorative cosmetics lab, personal care lab and instrumentation lab. All the laboratories are fully equipped with the necessary fittings, material and instruments. The college hopes to get more students in the next batch. Grant for building rural toilets to increase from Rs.3,400 to Rs.10,000

Grant for building rural toilets to increase from Rs.3,400 to Rs.10,000
Fri Jun 8, 2012 1:20 am (PDT)
UPA's battle of loo Cabinet approves raising grant for rural households to build toilets
The Union cabinet on Thursday approved raising the grant for rural households to build toilets from Rs3,400 to Rs10,000. The cabinet was also told that the Planning Commission has set aside Rs36,000 crore exclusively for sanitation during 12th Plan. It had allocated just Rs7,800 crore in the 11th Plan. Rural development minister Jairam Ramesh said prime minister Manmohan Singh had particularly directed him to build toilets in areas suffering from malnutrition. When questioned about feeding such areas first, the minister said it was the duty of the women and child welfare ministry. According to the new scheme, a family has to contribute Rs900 towards construction of the toilets, while the Centre will contribute Rs3,200, the state government Rs1400 and the remaining Rs4500 for construction will come from the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme. The scheme is also universal as the money will flow to both BPL (below poverty line) and APL (above poverty line) families. The cabinet also agreed to the prime minister's suggestion more attention should be paid to "concurrent evaluation" of the social programmes in rural areas, to plug loopholes and corruption, instead of assessing them only upon completion. Ramesh will formulate a proposal for creation of an independent concurrent evaluation office for the purpose. Ramesh said he also succeeded in securing approval of the cabinet for solid and liquid waste management in villages, so far allowed only in cities and towns. Depending on the size of the village, the Panchayat will get a grant between Rs7 lakhs and Rs20 lakhs. The cabinet also made toilet construction mandatory for availing funds for Indira Aawas Yojana (IAY). The minister said the IAY grant will also be raised from existing Rs45,000 to Rs75,000 by July end. Ramesh also informed that Sikkim has become the first open defecation-free state and this year Kerala and Himachal Pradesh will also follow suit, while Haryana has resolved to achieve the target in the next two years, Punjab in next five years, and the rest of the states in 10 years time. Going green makes business sense

Going green makes business sense
Fri Jun 8, 2012 1:47 am (PDT) Going green makes business sense....Hemant Joshi The telecom industry has a huge potential to contribute to the reduction in greenhouse gases. Although the telecom tower market is highly fragmented, the major six firms have around 90% of the total market After the Copenhagen climate summit in 2009, India agreed to cut carbon emissions intensity by 20-25% below the 2005 level by 2020. In India, around 20 million tonnes annually (mta) of CO2 emissions are from the telecom industry. In line with the challenges of global warming, India has begun to take small but decisive steps to address the problem as greenhouse gases are increasing the carbon footprint. The telecom industry has a huge potential to contribute to the reduction in greenhouse gases. Although the telecom tower market is highly fragmented, the major six firms have around 90% of the total market. India has around 400,000 telecom towers spread across rural and urban areas. Of the total wireless subscriber base (919.17 million as on March 2012), 35% comes from rural areas, where 70% of the population lives. Building energy efficient infrastructure across a vast country such as India involves huge investments. By 2016, Pike Research forecasts sustainable telecom network infrastructure investments will be over 61% of global telecom capital expenditure, representing a $194 billion (Rs. 10 trillion) market. Also, the towers in rural areas are still run with ageing diesel generators. The telecom sector, the second highest consumer of diesel after the railways, spends Rs. 12,600 crore annually on diesel. Officials monitoring towers estimate around 15-20% of total diesel consumption is pilfered. Rising running costs, widespread diesel pilferage and taxes are taking a toll on the cash flows of debt-laden telecom tower companies. For tower operators, going green is not only a viable business proposition but also a necessity. Applying Pareto's principle, 80% of the greenhouse effect can be reduced by ensuring efficient working of 20% of all greenhouse gas sources. According to analysts, the telecom tower industry can claim around 80 million carbon credits (1 carbon credit = 1 tonne of CO2) if it moves to complete green methods of power usage. Infrastructure sharing is the first step towards cost reduction, resulting in better returns by achieving economies of scale from the telecom tower business. It is becoming imperative for the telecom industry to explore alternative sources of fuel to run base stations, such as solar power, wind power, biodiesel and biogas. Companies such as Urban Green Energy Inc. are manufacturing more versatile wind turbines and hybrid wind/solar systems for use in applications ranging from suburban to off-grid telecoms towers in rural areas. Regulatory perspective The draft Companies Bill insists that companies voluntarily disclose contributions to improving ecology and promoting sustainable business. The Bill shows significant interest in wind power generation as well, aided by fiscal incentives, including tax breaks for 10 years and depreciation benefits of 80% on investment in the first year of a project's operation, besides earning carbon credits. Such provisions could be a boon for companies that voluntarily formulate environment-friendly operations and hence could gain customer loyalty in the long term. However, the crux of the problem is not in the laws, but in compliance. In India, 70% of the pollution is generated by micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs). These businesses should be encouraged through green financing by banks, education on the benefits of clean technologies, and improvement of their skill set to deploy these technologies and systems for upgrading and modernizing facilities.
Service providers Service providers are validating the strategic implications of green technologies and networks-in terms of cost, alternative business models and corporate social responsibility. For example, Vodafone has an ambitious plan to cut carbon emissions from the 2006-07 level of 1.23 mta to 0.615 mta by 2020. Vodafone has unveiled a solar-powered mobile handset in India to better serve the nation's energy-starved rural population. Idea Cellular Ltd is installing, at 200 sites in rural Bihar, solar hybrid sets that will reduce the fuel consumption of power generators from running for 15-16 hours to less than 5 hours a day. Bharti Airtel Ltd's GreenTowers P7 initiative is a comprehensive energy efficiency and alternative energy programme that will reduce diesel consumption by 66 million litres and CO2 by 0.15 mta. Close to 60% of Bharti's telecom sites in Africa are now powered by hybrid battery banks resulting in major reductions in emissions and operating costs for the company. Operators are building flexible networks to embrace new technologies (LTE, or long-term evolution, NFC, or near field communication, M2M, or machine-to-machine communication) and retiring legacy technologies that become obsolete with time. With increased focus on adopting green information technology, the recycling of electronic and computer waste is becoming increasingly accepted as the best practice as it presents significant value for customers, ensures compliance with all regulatory requirements, and benefits the environment. With the increasing demand for data services, both enterprises and service providers are building energy efficient data centres through improved system architecture and design. According to a report by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India, savings achieved from video-conferencing and tele-commuting with moderate ICT, or information and communications technology, penetration in 2030 can offset greenhouse gas emissions more than 70 times what they are now. Just think, what if half the people don't go out to work but work from home and half the vehicles go off the road. Here again, with the road congestion, high cost of fuel and cars, and health implications of long travel, going green makes a great proposition. Focusing on, and, adopting green technology has become a necessity due to high energy costs and access issues in rural areas. Serving the underserved is an emerging business model to tap the value at the bottom of the pyramid. Doing good is also about contributing to the larger issues of serving the underprivileged, reduction of the carbon footprint and making money out of it.

Seven simple steps to make your house greener

http://www.tehelka.com/story_main52.asp?filename=Ne090612KEEN.asp From Tehelka Magazine, Vol 9, Issue 23, Dated 09 June 2012 CURRENT AFFAIRS HOUSING
Keen on Green? Seven simple steps to make your house greener
By Tehelka Bureau
1 SKY TUBES Highly reflective tubes carry sunlight from external receptors to any part of the house. Receptors are designed to cut UV and IR rays and boast of minimal heat emission.
2 SKY LIGHTS Placed above 'view windows', polycarbonate sheets with embedded metal strips cut heat and deflect the direct rays of the sun towards the ceiling, providing diffused light.
3 SINK-COMMODE 90% of the water that ends in the drain is 'fresh' water. A sink-commode reuses water from the basin in the flush.
4 WIRE MESH By mixing air into the water, the thin wire mesh placed at the mouth of a faucet reduces water flow by 30% and creates a frothy stream, giving the illusion of more water.
5 BUILD LOCAL Materials not only have a financial cost but a carbon footprint (emissions behind its transport) as well. Excavated soil from a basement can be converted into stabilised earth blocks to build your house or you can use hollow interlocking blocks made from 50% papier-mâché and a cement mix. They work out cheaper and are good insulators, cutting long-term costs.
6 SOLAR INVERTERS For every watt absorbed by a conventional inverter, it only returns half - that's 50% electricity lost. Instead, replace your inverter with a small solar power system and save money and electricity.
7 CHIKS & SHADES Old school chiks and shades placed outside windows not only cut heat but provide diffused light.

Thanks the sudden upsurge in the "Awakening level" of our literate friends after Amir han's 'Satymev Jayate' on the subject of quality 'Health care for the masses" . 1.I mention that the concept of taking 'Generic Medicine' is not new , and I have been practicing it for some time for my needs as advised by my Doctor son in law. But the difficulty comes in procurement of the same, especially in the city of Mumbai . Hardly , there is any public demand due to doctor's not prescribing the same( Obvious reasons ,we all know). Thus even chemists are unaware about such drugs or even if made aware, do not keep these because: i) As we know such 'Generic Drugs' cost a peanut compared to the BRANDED counterpart , thus depriving them the amount of commission they get. ii) Secondly no demand/sale is being created , thanks to the 'Un-Holy' nexus between Drug Manufacturers ,Doctors and Chemists. 2. Such generic medicine shops ,although are in a few cities, none to my knowledge is available in MUMBAI. Why ? Obviously, the sky rocketting real estate cost to own/rent a shop with a Pharmacist salary to boot, is not an economically viable proposition at least in present times. Yes, the sliver lining can be achieved in future, if the present type of 'Awakening' spreads to the masses and they ask the doctors to only prescribe the 'Generic Medicine' in order to create a demand .Then in TIME TO COME, it can be achieved. To day, even if such shops get located in this vast city, will it be viable or practical for a senior citizen to commute ,spend on transportation and purchase the medicine from a far flug area from his/her residence ? The aim is laudable ,but how to achieve it ? Some suggest, let the Government give Aid. Is it possible in the present scenario in our State of Maharashtra, in view of hte Govt.'s crass negligence to common man ? If NGO's are going to set up, where are those 'Angelic' NGOs in each area with adequate resources to take care of ? And that will also require that 'FIRST A LIST OF ALL COMMONLY NEEDED DRUGS of "Generic visavis Brand" BE PREPARED , NOTIFIED AND PRESCRIBED BY THE FAMILY PHYSICIAN. Let us , therefore, harp on 'First things First' . Mohan Siroya Back to top Reply to sender | Reply to group | Reply via web post Messages in this topic (1) 9. Suggestion for Project on Rainwater Harvesting at Railways Platforms Posted by: "karmayog - tanya" info@karmayog.org Wed May 30, 2012 2:42 am (PDT) Subject: Suggestion for Project on Rainwater Harvesting at Railways Platforms........ Suprabha Maratheji Rainwater Harvesting Dept Municipal Corp of Greater Mumbai MUMBAI 400 001 14th May 2012 Respected Madam With reference to above, I would like to strongly suggest MCGM to take up the issue of developing the concept of Rainwater Harvesting in MUMBAI on a large scale. If only one project is taken up, at say important railway station, say BORIVALI or say ANDHERI, it will make a huge impact on all the Co operative Housing Societies in that areas, as ALMOST ALL THE OFFICE BEARERS of almost each Society pass through these railway stations, and when they see such huge project before their own eyes where the railways would be using the water collected on roof tops of each and every railway platforms, the impact could be HUGE. The same can then be advised to these people through your dept when they approach your office after seeming Boards at the sites of these platforms saying CONTACT MCGM RWH Dept.at .........VT, Mumbai. I am very much sure that the above idea can go a very long way and in addition to railways saving huge amount on water charges, the AWARENESS that will be created amongst people will be very very huge. Please do the needful in the matter and in case of need, please feel free to call me at the contact details given below and will be ready to do more on above issue, with your help and guidance, in the interests of our next generations too.
